About one in four graduands at the convocation ceremony of the
Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (Nafa) yesterday is a foreigner.
Principal HO Kah Leong said the enrolment of foreign students at
the school, mainly from China and Malaysia, had been rapidly
rising over the past few years. The percentage of foreign
students, who have to pay higher fees, was about 18 per cent ten
years ago but has gone up to nearly 28 per cent this year. it is
expected to reach 30 per cent next year. Of the 1,300 full-time
students in the school, nearly 400 are foreigners. About 250 are
Chinese nationals, 90 are Malaysians and about 15 are
Indonesians. The others come from Taiwan, Hongkong, Japan, South
Korea and Australia. Mr HO explained that the Education Ministry
had capped Nafa's foreign student quota at 30 per cent. If the
proportion of foreign students topped that benchmark, the ministry's subsidy for the school would be affected. (Straits
