Former President C. V. Devan Nair died of heart failure in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada on 7 Dec 2005 at 11.30am. He was 82.
Mr Nair served as the 3rd President of Singapore from 1981 to 1985.
"Devan Nair was a true son of Singapore, a patriot and a giant in his time," said an obituary placed by Mr & Mrs Ho See Beng & family in the 8 Dec 2005 edition of The Straits Times.
The National Trades Union Congress (NTUC), in a statement, said that "Mr Nair was a close comrade, friend and president to the pioneering generation of trade unionists. His leadership was critical in the tumultuous 1950s and 1960s."
