MINISTER FOR TRANSPORT ANNOUNCES OPENING OF BUANGKOK
MRT STATION |

Minister for Transport, Mr Yeo Cheow Tong,
announced today[1] that Buangkok MRT station will open in
January 2006. |
|
Minister Yeo had, in August, asked the Land
Transport Authority (LTA) to review the potential ridership in the area
and to assess the likely patronage of Buangkok MRT station if it were in
operations. |
|
LTA has completed its study which concludes
that there will be insufficient ridership in the area to sustain the
opening of Buangkok station until 2008. |
|
The review took into consideration the
latest schedule of completion of new residential development around the
station, the public transport usage pattern today, and information on
travel characteristics from the 2004 Household Interview Survey. |
|
Notwithstanding this, the LTA has
recommended that Buangkok Station be opened early to better serve the
residents of the recently-completed housing developments in the vicinity
of the station and to provide additional public transport choices for
residents in Hougang North and Sengkang South. |
|
SBS Transit has agreed even though the
projected station patronage is unlikely to make the station commercially
viable. In arriving at this decision, SBS Transit informed the Ministry
that they had considered the fact that through efficiency improvements,
they have managed to keep operating costs lower than originally
expected, thereby reducing the operating losses for the North East Line. |

The opening of Buangkok MRT station will
benefit the residents of newly completed residential developments in the
vicinity as well as upcoming developments such as Phase 1 of the Coris
development due for completion in the first quarter of next year. |
