12 Nabbed In Island-Wide Anti-Piracy Raid

In a 17-hour island-wide operation that commenced on 29 Nov 2006 at 7 am, Police arrested 11 men and a woman, aged between 22 to 63 years old, for distributing and selling pirated software and games to shops at several housing estates and a shopping centre along Orchard Road.
Through extensive surveillance and intelligence gathering, Police established the whereabouts of the group and mounted simultaneous operations at the locations where they operated - Hougang, Toa Payoh, Geylang, Tampines and Lucky Plaza.
About 40,000 pieces of CD-ROMs, comprising mainly computer software and games, and 630 pieces of counterfeit sports apparels were seized. The seizure is estimated to have a street value of about S$410,000/-.
This operation exemplifies Police¡¯s tough stance on blatant piracy and highlights our continuous enforcement efforts in crippling groups that are involved in the distribution and sale of pirated software products.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Tan Kah Khin, Head of Intellectual Property Rights Branch said, ¡°Despite past Police enforcement actions against syndicates, there remain some opportunists who still think they could make a fast buck through blatant disregard of our intellectual property rights laws. We are adamant to nip such activities at its bud and will spare no effort to pursue all available leads and take offenders to task.¡±
Persons found guilty of distributing or selling infringing articles of any work in which copyright or trademark subsists are liable to a fine not exceeding $10,000 per article, and up to maximum fine of S$100,000/-, or to an imprisonment for a term not exceeding 5 years or to both.
