Early this morning (18 Dec 2006), at
about 5.45 am, police received about 15 calls of earth tremors
felt in certain parts of Singapore. |
|
Meteorological Services confirmed that
an earthquake occurred in Southern Sumatra and registered 6.5 on
the Richter scale. |
|
Seventeen buildings in the central and
northeast parts of Singapore experienced tremors. |
|
The breakdown and type of buildings
where the tremors were felt are: |

- HDB
buildings (9)
- Private Residential Buildings (6)
- Commercial Buildings (2) |
|
Engineers from the HDB and BCA have
completed the inspection on the structural safety of the 17
buildings affected by the latest tremors at 10.50am. They have
confirmed that the structural integrity of all these buildings
have not been affected by the tremors. |
|
The public is advised that there is no
cause for alarm. Neither injuries nor law and order incidents have
been reported. |
|
Buildings in Singapore are designed
according to established design building codes and are
sufficiently robust to withstand tremors caused by distant
earthquakes. |
|
However, if cracks do develop as a
result of these tremors, residents/occupants should inform
building authorities such as HDB and BCA immediately. |
