In accordance with Section 35 of the
Parliamentary Elections Act, Polling Day, Saturday 6 May 2006 is a
public holiday. |
|
MOM has received enquiries on how an
employer should compensate employees who are required to work on that
Saturday, and employees who are not required to do so. In this regard,
the Ministry would like to inform companies that Polling Day, as a
public holiday, should be treated in the same manner as any other public
holidays. |
|
All employees covered by the Employment Act
are entitled to paid public holidays, including the public holiday on
Polling Day. |
|
If an employee is required to work on
Polling Day, he is to be paid an extra day¡¯s pay for the day¡¯s work, or
be given another day off. |
|
If an employee is not required to work on
that day, such as those who work a 5 day week from Mondays to Fridays,
he is also entitled to one day off in lieu, or be given one day¡¯s pay,
like any other public holiday falling on a Saturday. |

For employees not covered by the Employment
Act, their entitlement to paid public holidays will depend on the
employment contract or the prevailing arrangement between the employer
and his employees in respect of public holidays. |
