Police Take Stern View Against Those Who Organise And Participate In Illegal Assemblies
On 25 Aug 2007, a group of Myanmese dressed in similar white attire had assembled around Orchard MRT Station.
The intent of the assembly, which did not have a police permit, was to show support for fellow Myanmese who had been protesting back in Myanmar.
After assembling at Orchard MRT, members of the assembly divided themselves into smaller groups and started a procession in the direction of City Hall MRT.
Police investigations thus far suggest that the assembly was organised through the short messaging service (SMS).
Police are currently investigating into the incident. A total of 23 subjects are now assisting Police in investigations, including three who are believed to have initiated the series of SMS messages.
Police have also received reports that there will be another similar assembly and procession this weekend. On this, Police would like to remind the public that they should not participate in an assembly or procession that does not have a permit as it is an offence to do so.
