The Land Transport Authority (LTA) conducted
enforcement operations from 19 November - 1 December 2007 on errant taxi
drivers who solicit, overcharge or refuse to convey passengers. |
|
In enforcement operations conducted over a
13 day period, 14 errant taxi drivers were nabbed at several spots such
as Boat Quay, CHIJMES, Clarke Quay, Mustafa Centre, Orchard Towers and
Shenton Way. |
|
Of these, 6 taxi drivers were found
overcharging and 8 were caught for refusing to convey passengers. None
was found touting. |
|
The LTA will continue its enforcement
operations in cooperation with the taxi companies and taxi drivers'
associations to eradicate and deter such malpractices. |
|
Of the 130 taxi drivers caught since 24
October 2007, LTA has issued 52 Notice of Traffic Offences (NTO) to
errant taxi drivers, with more to follow after on-going investigations
are completed. |
|
If penalised under the Vocational Licensing
Points System (VLPS), these taxi drivers will receive fines and demerit
points. |
|
So far, 9 of these taxi drivers will have
their vocational licence revoked while another 10 taxi drivers will have
their vocational licence suspended between 2 - 8 weeks. |

"While the number of errant taxi drivers
caught has decreased substantially since the stiffer penalties took
effect, we will continue to be vigilant in our enforcement activities.
Besides the regular 'hotspots' for errant taxi drivers, our enforcement
officers are also carrying out surveillance at other popular night spots
such as along Beach Road, Chinatown, Lau Pa Sat and North Bridge Road to
ensure that the errant taxi drivers have not merely moved their
activities to other areas. We strongly urge taxi commuters to report
errant taxi drivers to LTA," said Mr Jeremy Yap, Acting Group Director,
Vehicle & Transit Licensing, LTA. |

To raise awareness among taxi commuters that
touting for passengers is an offence, LTA has progressively, since 1
December 2007, placed taxi advisories at taxi stands in the Central
Business District (CBD) and is working with the taxi companies to
display similar advisories in all taxis. |
|
These advisories carry LTA's hotline number
(1800-CALL LTA or 1800-225 5582) to make it easy for passengers,
tourists and the public to give feedback or report errant taxi drivers. |
|
Members of the public are encouraged to call
LTA's hotline at 1800-CALL LTA (1800-225 5582) should they wish to give
feedback or report errant taxi drivers. |
