8 Youth Runners Arrested For Unlicensed Moneylending Related Activities

 
Police arrested eight Chinese male subjects, aged between 14 and 27 years old, for unlicensed moneylending related harassment activities in Hougang, Sengkang and Pasir Ris in a 20-hour operation which ended on the morning of 27 December 2007.
Among the items seized during the operation included mobile phones, marker pens, paint cans and bank account books.
The youths are believed to have conducted a spate of unlicensed moneylending related harassment across the island and were arrested after extensive probes by the Special Task Force of Ang Mo Kio Police Division.
Commander of Ang Mo Kio Police Division, Superintendent Lee Chin Ek, commended his officers for their vigilance leading to the arrest of the eight subjects and said, “Police will spare no efforts to identify and arrest the offenders who commit acts of public disorder, including acts of unlicensed moneylending harassment to the public."
Four of the subjects will be charged in court on 28 December 2007 for unlicensed moneylending related harassment. The other four subjects have been released on bail pending further police investigation.
First-time offenders found guilty of assisting in the carrying on of the business of an unlicensed moneylender, may be fined up to $200 000, or jailed a maximum of 2 years, or both. Repeat offenders face a maximum fine of $200 000, and a maximum jail term of 5 years.
Persons who harass or intimidate any persons in connection with loans by an unlicensed moneylender face a maximum fine of S$40,000, or maximum jail term of 3 years, or both. Persons who cause damage to any property during the commission of such acts of harassment are also liable to caning.
